Longin's Wakey Boo 86 is the 8.6 cm x 22 g size in the Wakey Boo series, a floating wake bait designed to offer great versatility all year round. Compact yet already highly present in the water, it's ideal when the forage fish are not yet large, such as in early spring, while remaining effective in the following seasons for seabass and coastal predators actively feeding on medium-sized prey. The highly buoyant "fat" body generates a very pronounced water displacement, allowing the Wakey Boo 86 to work effectively between the surface and the layer immediately below it. Even at very slow retrieve speeds, it maintains a strong presence in the water, a feature that makes it particularly useful when a slow, visible lure is needed, capable of attracting fish even from a distance. With an ultra-slow retrieve, the Wakey Boo 86 swims just below the surface with a sinuous and natural rolling action. As the speed is gradually increased, the action becomes enriched with lateral wobbling, eventually turning into a wider and more pronounced wobble during faster retrieves. This progression allows the lure to be adapted to different current conditions, fish activity levels and spot depths. The internal moving weight system is designed to support the lure's action and generate a dull "gotogoto" sound, similar to a low-frequency rattle. This acoustic attraction, combined with the strong water displacement produced by the voluminous body, signals the lure's presence even to more distant predators and makes it possible to cover a wide range of areas effectively, from super shallow zones to spots with deeper bottoms.
How to use it?
The Wakey Boo 86 performs best with a steady, medium-slow retrieve, keeping it within the range between the surface and the layer just beneath it. In this mode, it produces a regular, visible, and natural movement, ideal for imitating a forage fish moving slowly through the upper layers of the water. With quick retrieve variations using the reel, the lure generates sudden and unpredictable lateral darts, a true "warp" action capable of breaking up the linear swimming pattern and triggering strikes even from wary sea bass, apathetic fish, or predators that follow without committing. This technique is highly effective in clear water, heavily pressured spots, or situations where a sudden change of rhythm can make the difference.
Practical tips
- Use it with a steady medium-slow retrieve as your basic approach, adjusting the speed according to the current;
- Always maintain contact with the lure to feel the vibrations and understand when it is working correctly;
- In calm water or with wary fish, slow down the retrieve to enhance the rolling action just below the surface;
- With current, wind, or more active fish, slightly increase the speed to accentuate wobbling, water displacement, and acoustic appeal;
- Add short accelerations with the reel to generate sudden lateral darts and stimulate strikes.
